Evansville Library To End Overdue Item Fines

Last updated on Tuesday, August 28, 2018

(EVANSVILLE) - The library system in Indiana’s third-largest city is becoming the latest in the state to drop fines for overdue items to encourage more people to visit its branches.

The Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library will end all fines on overdue books and other items on Saturday. The goal is to remove barriers that stop individuals, youths and families from checking out library items.

Library engagement officer Heather McNabb tells the Evansville Courier & Press that library officials wanted to reopen access to everyone who can't afford to pay late fines because of financial hardship.

Although those fines are being eliminated, library fees for services such as copying and printing will remain in place. Materials borrowed through Interlibrary Loan may remain subject to late fines.
