2018 Bike & Walk Summit Kicks Off In Indianapolis Aug. 29-30

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Health by Design, in partnership with the Indiana Department of Transportation, Indiana State Department of Health, and Bicycle Indiana will host the 2018 Bike & Walk Summit on August 29 and 30, in Downtown Indianapolis at the Omni Severin Hotel.

The theme of this year's conference is Leading Locally for Active Transportation. The summit will bring together leaders and representatives throughout the state of Indiana for an opportunity to share and showcase best practices toward advancing access, safety, connectivity and fun for people who walk, bike and ride transit.

"We have a fantastic program lined-up for Summit participants," said Kim Irwin, Health by Design's executive director. "We will hear from national experts addressing topics of placemaking, Complete Streets and storytelling. Breakout sessions will showcase Indiana examples of the planning, policy and programmatic strategies being used to create walkable, bikeable communities.

Nancy Tibbett, Bike Indiana's executive director shared, "We are thrilled to host the 2018 Bike and Walk Summit here in Indianapolis. The landscape is ripe for conversation that will lead to improvements in the environment for cyclists throughout Indiana. We know that collectively we can do more, and I am thrilled to be able to use this opportunity to leverage the tireless work of our state's leaders, advocates and thought partners to advance change on a much broader scale."

Who: Health by Design, Indiana Department of Transportation, Indiana State Department of Health, and Bicycle Indiana

What: The Indiana Bike and Walk Summit will include keynote speakers, breakout sessions, mobile workshops and classroom-based trainings. Keynote speakers include:

Juanita Hardy, a Senior Visiting Fellow for Creative Placemaking with the Urban Land Institute
Andy Boenau, AICP, Director of Mobility Strategy at The Gotcha Group and the Creator of Speakeasy Media
Cynthia Hoyle, FAICP, a Fellow of the American Institute of Certified Planners and the Institute of Transportation Engineers

The summit will also include a panel discussion of elected and appointed officials:

Eva Bates North, Town Council President of Corydon

John "JD" England, Jr., Mayor of Mitchell

April Fisher, Town Manager of Cumberland

Bruce Kimball, Councilor in Carmel

Craig Luedeman, Mayor of Seymour
