Health Care Coalition To Demand AG Curtis Hill Withdraw From Federal Lawsuit Challenging The ACA

Last updated on Thursday, July 26, 2018

(INDIANAPOLIS) - A coalition of health care groups and concerned individuals will deliver letters and a petition signed by hundreds of Hoosiers to Indiana Attorney General Curtis Hill’s Statehouse office Friday.

The documents demand that Indiana withdraw from a federal lawsuit that would dismantle the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

Hill signed Indiana onto the lawsuit in February, joining with 19 other states. The lawsuit puts the ACA and its numerous protections in jeopardy. If it is successful, insurance companies could once again deny coverage to, or drop, the 2.7 million Hoosiers with pre-existing conditions. The Trump administration said in June that it would not defend the ACA against this legal challenge, making the threat very real.

"The ACA has helped millions of Hoosiers access health care and includes protections for those with pre-existing conditions like diabetes, asthma and cancer," said Protect Our Care Indiana Spokeswoman Kate Shepherd. "Our elected officials should be working to improve the ACA, rather than to dismantle it - especially when they don't have a better solution. Indiana doesn't have to - and shouldn't be - part of this shameful sabotage. The lives of Hoosiers are at stake."

Who: Protect Our Care Indiana, Hoosiers for a Commonsense Health Plan, People of Faith for Access to Medicines, Faith in Indiana and Planned Parenthood Advocates of Indiana and Kentucky

What: Demand Indiana Attorney General Curtis Hill withdraw from Texas v. HHS

Where: Outside Indiana Attorney General's Statehouse office, Room 219

When: Friday, July 27, 10:30 a.m. EDT

Why: Because Indiana's elected officials should be helping Hoosiers, not sabotaging an act that is helping millions of Hoosiers access affordable, meaningful health care.
