(VALPARAISO) - Police say a woman is in custody after her 3-year-old daughter was found unresponsive in a pond in northwestern Indiana.
Tamira Billingslea was pronounced dead at a hospital Monday night.
A police dog found the child in the pond about 45 minutes after authorities in Valparaiso responded to a call about a missing girl. Tamira's mother, Tasia Perkins, was later taken to the Porter County jail on a neglect charge.
It wasn't immediately known if she has a lawyer who could comment. Sgt. Michael Grennes says Perkins gave inconsistent statements about how long her daughter had been missing.
