Last updated on Wednesday, July 18, 2018

(Indianapolis) - The Indiana Arts Commission (IAC) and Fort Wayne, Indiana-based public television station PBS39 jointly announced today that the 2018 Indiana Governor’s Arts Awards will be televised for the first time by delayed broadcast.

"Since 2007, the Arts Commission has presented the awards in several communities around the state as a way of sharing Indiana's highest honor in the arts," said Lewis C. Ricci, IAC Executive Director. "Through this partnership with PBS39, the 2018 Governor's Arts Awards may well reach the largest audience in the history of the event."

PBS39 will make the program available for statewide PBS broadcast. The awards program will also provide PBS39 the opportunity to utilize a new remote production vehicle which the station was able to secure through its community fundraising efforts. The mobile production unit will enable PBS39 greater technical capabilities of service to its viewing audience.

"PBS39 is increasing the visibility and accessibility of our region's cultural and community assets in new ways," said Bruce R. Haines, PBS39 President and General Manager. "By expanding regional programming through collaborative productions with area cultural and civic organizations, PBS39 can connect these performances and events with families in our 11-county area who may not have the capacity to attend."

Anticipated capabilities for the 28-foot production truck include microwave and IP-based connectivity, six cameras, and a generator to produce from any location.

The 2018 awards will be held Friday, October 19, 2018 at Sweetwater Sound, Inc., Fort Wayne, Indiana also marking the first time the program has been presented at a private sector arts-related business.

"The arts have a significant impact on employment and economic vitality in Indiana, and Sweetwater Sound represents perhaps the largest private sector arts-related employer in the state." Ricci said. "Beyond the jobs created by Sweetwater, the company makes significant financial as well as philanthropic contributions of state-of-the-art studio and technical expertise to schools and nonprofit organizations in the greater Fort Wayne area."

The Indiana Governor's Arts Awards were originally presented in 1973, the Indiana Governor's Arts Awards represent the state's highest recognition of significant achievements in or contributions to the arts. The biennial awards have been presented to artists, arts educators, philanthropists, arts administrators, businesses and communities. The awards presented to the recipients are original works of art created by a contemporary Indiana artist.

This year, the awards program will be the closing event for the 2018 Indiana Arts Homecoming convening at the Arts Campus in downtown Fort Wayne, Indiana.
