(GARY) - Authorities say one swimmer was rescued and another is missing amid choppy Lake Michigan waters off of a northwestern Indiana beach.
Police in Gary say crews looked for the woman Monday evening near Marquette Beach until the search was temporarily suspended due to weather conditions and darkness. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources identified her as a 24-year-old from Merrillville.
The search was to resume Tuesday.
The (Northwest Indiana) Times reports Daniel Harman, of Portage, was at the beach with his girlfriend and two daughters when he saw three people drifting away. He says he swam out and grabbed a man while another swimmer got to land on her own.
The third swimmer, however, disappeared in the water.
