Milling Begins On I-65/Clark County Prepping For Surface Pavement

Last updated on Thursday, June 14, 2018

(CLARK CO.) - Milling operations began today in the right lane and along the outside shoulder area of northbound Interstate 65 in Clark County as contracted crews prepare to place the surface lift of asphalt pavement on Indiana’s $67 million added travel lanes project that begins a mile north of State Road 60 near Sellersburg Exit 9 and ends just north of Memphis Road Exit 16.

Northbound I-65 traffic is restricted to two lanes.

On Monday during daytime hours, the right lane of northbound I-65 lane between mile markers 9.5 and 16.5 will be surfaced with Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA), a premium material providing extended service life and better coefficient of friction. Again, traffic will be restricted to two lanes during the week.

At the same time, INDOT officials anticipate milling operations might begin in the right lane and outside shoulder area of southbound I-65 - starting at Memphis Road. Two southbound lanes will remain open to traffic.

Early in July, operations switch to overnight hours while I-65's center lane is both milled and paved. This requires the closure of two travel lanes, leaving one lane open between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. The milling machine will precede the motorpaver in a lengthy paving train - beginning on the northbound side of I-65.

Since last fall, I-65 traffic has been running on an intermediate lift of asphalt. Application of the surface pavement and permanent pavement markings - requiring warm, stable temperatures - can now be made.

In the concrete section to the south, a tentative schedule calls for two nights of saw cutting and joint sealing. That work - between mile markers 8.5 and 9.0 - should begin June 26.

E & B Paving is Indiana's prime contractor for reconstructing I-65 in Clark County. Operations should conclude before the end of July.
