Lanane: Separation Of Children From Their Parents Has Permanent Consequences

Last updated on Wednesday, June 20, 2018

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Senate Democratic Leader Tim Lanane (D-Anderson) released the following statement upon President Donald Trump’s signing of an executive order to end the separation of children from their parents at the United States border.

"While I am glad to hear that the federal government will stop forcibly removing children from their families, this was a humanitarian crisis fully created by the Trump Administration that never should have happened. Our concern now turns to those families who have already been broken apart and the urgency for the Administration to reunite them as quickly as possible. The former acting Director of ICE has said that "I think we're going to see hundreds of cases, where children are permanently separated from their parents, becoming wards of the United States." This is unacceptable.

In addition to never seeing their parents again, the trauma and potential abuse these children suffered in detainment will stay with them for the rest of their lives. None of the consequences of our president's actions are solved by the signing of this executive order."

Sen. Lanane represents Indiana Senate District 25 which includes portions of Madison and Delaware counties, including the City of Muncie and the southeastern portion of the City of Anderson.
