(INDIANAPOLIS) - The transition from high school to college, technical training, or career is a critical step in a young person’s life.
As young people become independent, their immediate post-high school decisions can have a significant impact on their lifetime earnings, opportunities for career advancement, and job satisfaction. The Indiana Youth Institute (IYI) is hosting an event for those who work with young people to help them understand all of their options for life after high school.
IYI's 2018 College and Career Conference on June 13 and 14 is designed specifically for school counselors, educators and community-based practitioners to discover the best practices that set up students for success after high school graduation. National speakers, including recent American School Counseling Association and National College Access Network award winners will present on the factors that influence students' readiness for college and careers. Attendees will engage in discussion about options for youth in their specific geographic areas and have time to learn from other participants.
The conference will take place at the Indianapolis Marriott North, 3645 River Crossing Parkway in Indianapolis. The full conference starts on June 13 at 8 a.m. and ends on June 14 at 4 p.m. On June 13, keynote speaker Dr. Michele Borba will speak to attendees about unlocking their students' potential. Borba is an author, educator and parenting expert whose best-selling book "Unselfie" focuses on developing empathy in young people. Tuesday sessions will lay a
foundation for attendees to learn about academic, financial and social-emotional readiness, including serving students with a focus on equity and inclusion for Latino students, students with disabilities and first-generation college students.
EJ Carrion, co-founder of the Student Success Agency, author and Gates Millennium Scholar, will deliver the final keynote address on June 14, focusing on how busy adults can ensure that all students receive support and guidance. Wednesday sessions will help attendees focus on collective impact and their specific professional roles, with sessions designed specifically for school counselors and for community-based professionals.
The cost to attend the two-day event is $150 for Indiana residents. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and Professional Growth Points are available at no extra cost. Online registration and more information about the conference is available at www.iyi.org/ccc.
