Flashback: Democrat Donnelly Attacked President Trump's North Korea Strategy Just Months Prior To Historic Summit

Last updated on Monday, June 11, 2018

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana Republican Party Chairman Kyle Hupfer released the following statement, asking why Democrat Joe Donnelly “lambasted” President Donald Trump for the president’s North Korea denuclearization strategy, prior to shifting his position earlier today leading up to this week’s historic summit:

"Now that it's a year when his name is on the ballot, you'll hear Democrat Joe Donnelly claim that he votes in support of President Donald Trump. But that wasn't the case last year, when Democrat Donnelly delivered a speech on the U.S. Senate floor strongly criticizing President Trump for lacking a 'clear strategy' with North Korea.

"With President Trump poised to make progress to rid the Korean Peninsula of nuclear weapons, taking action to make the world a safer place for all and highlighting America's strength on the global stage, let's all remember that when it mattered most, Democrat Joe Donnelly chose to present what the Indianapolis Star called a 'blistering critique' of the president. Instead of standing beside the president to work toward this historic moment, Donnelly chose to play politics.

"When they go to vote in November, Hoosiers should remember which U.S. Senate candidate consistently stands with President Trump - conservative outsider Mike Braun - and which candidate isn't there when we need him most - Democrat Joe Donnelly."

At 9 p.m. ET, President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un are set to meet for an historic summit in Singapore with the goal of denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula.

In September 2017, Democrat Joe Donnelly delivered a speech from the U.S. Senate floor and released a statement criticizing President Trump for his approach to North Korea. And then earlier today, Donnelly backtracked, claiming that he now "supports President Trump and his administration's stated goal."
