Vietnam Veterans' Moving Wall To Change Locations, Still Scheduled To Open June 2

Last updated on Sunday, May 6, 2018

(LAWRENCE) - Vietnam Veterans of America Sammy L. Davis Chapter 295 has announced “The Moving Wall,” a half scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C, will move from its announced location of Lawton Loop in Lawrence, Indiana about a mile east to Memorial Park, located northwest of the intersection of Lee Road and Memorial Park Drive in Lawrence.

The Wall will still arrive May 31 and have its opening ceremony starting at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 2 according to Mike Hamm, past president of Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 295, who also serves as site director.

"We originally planned on bringing The Wall to its usual location on the south end of Lawton Loop," Hamm said, "but the homeowners association there had already scheduled an event for that weekend so we asked the Reuse Authority for another location in the area and they accommodated us by giving us the use of Memorial Park.

"It's a great location just south of the Fort Harrison YMCA with plenty of parking nearby," Hamm concluded.

According to Hamm, the opening ceremony will begin Saturday, June 2 at 1 p.m. with a concert by the Crossroads of America Scout Band followed by blessings by several religions including native Americans and a flyover by Vietnam-era helicopters. The formal dedication, which starts at 2 p.m. will include special music and dramatic pieces by area performers. Speakers will include Air Force Maj. Gen. Mark A. Pilar, who flew 90 combat missions in Vietnam, and Army Maj. Gen. James T. Jackson, Director of The United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration.

The Wall will be on display until the morning of June 4 when it will be dismantled for transport.

All events are free and open to the public.
