Indiana Special Session To Take Up School Takeover Measure

Last updated on Tuesday, May 8, 2018

(INDIANAPOLIS) - An Indiana legislative council signed off on allowing a controversial school takeover bill to be considered when lawmakers gather May 14 for a special session.

The council is comprised of leaders from both parties. Majority Republicans supported taking the bill up, while Democrats voted against doing so.

The bill would further diminish local control of Gary and Muncie schools. The two districts have mismanaged finances for years.

Supporters say the proposal will help stabilize both the districts and prevent others from falling into similar financial distress.

Democrats say it's unnecessary and undemocratic.

The legislation was among a handful of bills approved for special session consideration.

The measures died during the regular session in March after bickering Republicans blew past a deadline to adjourn.
