Hostetler, Tavitas, And Van Gilder Nominees For Court Of Appeals Vacancy

Last updated on Wednesday, May 16, 2018

(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Indiana Judicial Nominating Commission selected Hon. Steven L. Hostetler, Hon. Elizabeth F. Tavitas and Mr. David C. Van Gilder as the three nominees for the upcoming vacancy on the Court of Appeals of Indiana, third district.

The Commission will submit a report to Governor Eric Holcomb in the upcoming days. After officially receiving the list of nominees, the Governor has 60 days to make his selection.

According to the Indiana Constitution and state statute, the seven-member Judicial Nominating Commission must recruit and select candidates to fill vacancies on Indiana appellate courts. A position on the Court of Appeals is available because Judge Michael Barnes will retire in early summer.

Judge Barnes announced his decision to retire in January. Applications for the position were available in January and due in March. The Commission considered applicants' legal education, writings, reputation in the practice of law, and other pertinent information. It also conducted in-person public interviews of the twelve applicants. It announced six finalists in early May, and the finalists were again publicly interviewed. After deliberations in executive session, the Commission publicly voted to send the three nominees, Hostetler, Tavitas, and Van Gilder to the Governor. Applications and information about the vacancy can be found online.
