(MILTON) - Leaders of a small eastern Indiana town are hoping they’ll soon have the money to tear down a nearly century-old former school building that’s become a dilapidated eyesore.
The two-story brick Milton School in Wayne County was built in 1923 and was last an elementary school in 1996. It later housed an Amish restaurant, antique shops and served as a venue for bluegrass and country concerts.
Milton Town Council president John Noland tells the (Richmond) Palladium-Item that the building could have been saved a decade ago if a $469,000 state grant the town is receiving for demolition had been available.
But the roof has caved in on the school's auditorium and much of the building is now water damaged.
Noland says it could be year before demolition work begins.
