Last updated on Wednesday, April 11, 2018

(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Indiana Department of Education announced today the 2017 National Assessment for Educational Progress (NAEP) Mathematics and Reading Results for Indiana. Indiana continues to emphasize critical literacy components as part of daily instruction. As reflected in eighth grade reading, Indiana was one of eight states to have a significant score increase. Since 2015, Indiana’s overall student score for eighth grade reading increased four points to 272.

"Ensuring Indiana's children are becoming more academically proficient each day is the goal of educators across the state," said Dr. Jennifer McCormick, Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction. "I am pleased with the eighth grade reading results, showing our efforts in increasing proficiency. In all other content areas, we continue to maintain our place as a leader in preparing students for success in life beyond high school."

Indiana's eighth grade score is seven points above the national average score of 265 on the reading assessment. Over time, Indiana reinforces the value of foundational reading skills and measures these skills annually during the third grade on the IREAD-3 assessment. Last year's eighth grade population, the second cohort of students under the state's IREAD-3 requirement, demonstrated an increase in reading performance in 2017.

In overall student scores in fourth grade mathematics and fourth grade reading, there was a one point decrease. In 2017, Indiana's overall student score for fourth grade math of 247 is eight points higher than the national average score of 239. Indiana's overall student score for eighth grade mathematics of 288 was a one point increase. Indiana's score is six points above the national average of 282 on the mathematics assessment. Indiana's percentage scores for students who scored at the Advanced Proficiency level across multiple subpopulations including White, Black, and Hispanic students were at all-time high percentages (White 13 percent, Black 4 percent, Hispanic 6 percent). Indiana's overall student score for fourth grade reading of 226 is five points above the national average score of 221 on the reading assessment.
