Annual Sassafras Tea Festival And Civil War Living History This Weekend In Vernon

(VERNON) - The Jennings County Historical Society plans to conduct its annual Sassafras Tea Festival and Civil War Living History from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday April 28 and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday in Vernon.

Visitors will be able to sample sassafras teas and cookies and purchase ham and bean dinners, chicken and noodle dinners, more than 600 homemade pies, banana bread, poppyseed bread and more.

Members of the 11th Indiana, Vernon Greys, 49th Indiana and the 44th Tennessee Civil War reenactors will be present to teach visitors about life during the Civil War. They will conduct a mock battle at 1:15 both days at Muscatatuck Park. That costs $5 per vehicle.

The reenactors also will fire artillery and cannons at 9:30 p.m. April 28 at the Vernon gym immediately following the Blue/Grey Ball, which starts at 7 p.m.

Members of the Indiana Blacksmith Association also will create art pieces, and carriage rides will be available during the event.

All proceeds are used to maintain the Jennings County Historical Society museum, the Victorian Pattern home, and the blacksmith shop and to sponsor other events throughout the year.
