Indiana Senate Plan Would Allow Schools To Hire Unlicensed Teachers

Last updated on Wednesday, March 7, 2018

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Some teachers in Indiana classrooms could soon not have a state license.

A plan introduced in the Indiana Senate this week would allow schools to fill up to ten percent of their open teaching positions with unlicensed teachers.

Indiana is one of many states facing a teacher shortage.

State Representative Bob Behning says the idea is to hire soon-to-be teachers, or college graduates who have not yet passed the state's basic skills test for teachers.

Individual districts would make the final decision about who to hire, or whether to hire anyone without a license.
