Last updated on Thursday, March 15, 2018

(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Indiana Department of Education today announced the first Indiana Education for Homeless Children and Youth Statewide Conference. The event will focus on preparing individuals for work with, and on behalf of, young children and their families experiencing homelessness. The conference will take place March 19 at Warren Central High School in Indianapolis.

"Protecting our state's most vulnerable is important to working towards student success for all children," said Dr. Jennifer McCormick, Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction. "This conference will provide a resurgence in our efforts, and I am excited to see the work that will come from dedicated individuals."

Indiana's Education for Children and Youth Experiencing Homelessness Program provides guidance and professional development to districts on the federal and state requirements to educate and support homeless children and youth. The program also outlines assurances to ensure homeless students have equal access to a quality education. Training will cover the following: Understanding Children and Youth Experiencing Homelessness, Every Student Succeed Act Guidance, Attendance and Chronic Absenteeism, Strategies in Removing Barriers, Transportation for Homeless Students, College Access and Success for Students Experiencing Homelessness, and Homeless Liaison Responsibilities/Duties. The training will elevate the Indiana McKinney-Vento Program to a national model and provide a continuum of learning and support activities designed to enhance participant awareness and knowledge of homeless youth and families.
