Subject Jumps From Speeding Car, Listed In Serious Condition

(TIPPECANOE CO) - On Monday at approximately 11:54 a.m. on SR 25 northbound north of CR 500 east, a subject jumped from a speeding car that he was driving and was airlifted to Methodist Hospital with life threatening injuries.

Probationary Trooper Daniel Connolly was on patrol on I-65 southbound near the exit of SR 25 (175 MM/175 exit) when he noticed a black 2008 Volkswagen commit a traffic infraction. The Volkswagen exited on to SR 25 northbound and started to accelerate. Trooper Connolly continued to follow him and then activated his emergency lights to stop the Volkswagen. The driver started to speed up and the suddenly climbed out of the driver's side window as it was traveling at a speed in excess of 70 miles per hour.

Trooper Connolly came to a stop and had to run back to the subject who was severally injured. As he tried to administer first aid, the subject became very combative. Trooper Connolly requested assistance and Sergeant Kim Riley of the Indiana State Police and Tippecanoe County Deputies came and assisted in controlling the subject until paramedics arrived to render aid to the subject.

At this time, we are not sure why he jumped from the vehicle. Drugs and or alcohol may be a contributing factor in the crash. He was taken to IU Arnett Hospital and then transported to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis with life-threatening injuries. The car continued down the roadway for about one quarter of a mile before getting stuck in the median. The investigation is continuing.

Assisting at the scene was Sergeant Brian Olehy, Lieutenant Tom McKee, Trooper Detectives Brock Russell and Ben Rector all from the ISP Lafayette Post, Deputies from the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Office and Tippecanoe County EMS. The name of the subject will not be released until family is notified.
