Most Streamed Events In 2017

Last updated on Thursday, February 8, 2018

(UNDATED) - You are what you stream, right? The team at Frontier Communications looked at the Most Streamed Events of 2017 — between sports events, political events, contests, pageants, and more, what do your state’s streaming habits say about you?

Well, according to research, Frontier Communications - basketball really is life in Indiana - college basketball, specifically.

For the second year in a row, March Madness was the most streamed event in Indiana, beating out events like the Super Bowl, the Grammy's and even the Presidential Inauguration.

Here are a few other interesting findings that stood out:

California, Louisiana, and Hawaii all had the same "nerdy" interest

- Electronic sports are becoming more and more mainstream. Intel Masters World Championship 2017 had 173,000 fans attending the stadium event and reached over 46 million unique viewers online.

Everything's bigger in Texas...and South Carolina?

- Including the number of people interested in the Mayweather v McGregor fight (the second biggest pay-per-view of all time!)

North Dakota and Alaska couldn't get enough of the Miss America Pageant.

- Probably because the indigenous Tlingit people of Alaska were represented in the top 10, and Miss North Dakota won for the first time ever.

215 Million Americans Watched the Solar Eclipse

- 88 percent of American adults watched the eclipse, either in person or online. That's about twice the number of people who watched the Super Bowl in 2016 and 18 times as large as the Game of Thrones finale.

The solar eclipse was a once-in-a-lifetime event

- 88 percent of American adults watched the eclipse, either in person or online. That's about twice the number of people who watched the Super Bowl in 2016 and 18 times as large as the Game of Thrones finale.
-The solar eclipse was a once-in-a-lifetime event, sometimes occurring once every 100 years in certain locations.

Families all across America tuned in for the Patriots major Super Bowl comeback.

- After the Patriot's big win this year, it makes sense that the Superbowl would be the favorite event of states like Maine, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island. We're just not sure how Massachusetts (home base for the Patriots and the Gillette Stadium) ended up with the U.S. Tennis Open as their favorite.

Yes, NASCAR is still a thing

- Especially in Florida, Vermont, and West Virginia.

Basketball fans loved watching the Cavs face off with the Golden State Warriors

- The NBA finals were the favorite event of 9 states, while college basketball's March Madness was the favorite of 4 states.

The Kentucky Derby made the list

- But only in Kentucky

Methodology

The Frontier Communications team defined an "event" as anything that you could plan ahead to stream on TV. Many political developments and natural disasters therefore were not considered "events" in the context of this study. After compiling an extensive list of events that anyone could plan ahead and stream on TV in 2017, we used Google Trends data to research the search volume around phrases such as "stream the solar eclipse" or "stream the Kentucky Derby". The search volume around these phrases, when compared against each other, were indicative of the favorite events of 2017 that we identified in this report.
