Indiana Department Of Natural Resources Celebrating 2018 As Year Of The Bird

Last updated on Wednesday, February 7, 2018

(UNDATED) - This year marks the centennial of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, the most powerful and important bird protection law ever passed. In honor of this milestone, we will be celebrating 2018 as the “Year of the Bird.”

Each month Indiana Department of Natural Resources will feature a bird of the month so that you can help celebrate.

Bird of the Month: American Crow

In the family Corvidae, the American crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos) is a long-legged, black bird common to woodland, agricultural and urban areas across North America. They are omnivores, meaning they eat both plants and animal material, including garbage. The American crow is incredibly social and usually forms family groups consisting of breeding pairs and previous year's young. They often work together to find food resources and cooperate to harass and drive away predators in a behavior known as mobbing. They sometimes congregate in communal roosts that can approach 2 million crows. There are as many as 27 million American crows in North America.
