Department Of Revenue Programs Recoup Tax Dollars For Vital Services

Last updated on Friday, February 9, 2018

(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Indiana Department of Revenue (DOR) continues to uncover ways to help individuals and businesses be compliant with tax laws to ensure funding is provided to vital state and local services.

The Individual Income Tax Non-filer Program and Voluntary Disclosure (VDA) Program are two services within DOR keeping individuals and business complaint with state tax laws. The Non-filer Program started in 2013 to identify individuals who are not filing taxes with the State of Indiana, but should have done so. This is a collaborative effort with various state and federal agencies to ensure all Hoosier taxpayers are in compliance.

"Since 2013, the Non-filer Program has identified nearly 170,000 Hoosier taxpayers who should have filed an Indiana tax return, resulting in over $100 million in tax dollars recouped for the state of Indiana," said DOR Commissioner Adam Krupp. "By making sure taxpayers are in compliance, vital funds are allocated to counties, as well as to support important public services Hoosiers rely on, such as public safety, road improvements and education services."

All non-filers identified will receive a letter from DOR encouraging customers to either file the missing return for the periods noted or contact DOR to discuss why a return was not filed. Customers have 30 days to respond.

Non-filer Program benefits include:

The VDA Program allows businesses and certain individuals that are not in compliance with Indiana tax laws to come forward voluntarily and anonymously to request participation in this program. The VDA Program is available to customers that do not have a brick-and-mortar tax filing obligation in Indiana, by either owning or leasing a property.

"The Voluntary Disclosure Program has helped over 350 customers avoid substantial penalties and any surprise audits," said Commissioner Krupp. "Over 20 million dollars has been recovered and put back into Indiana's economy."

To qualify the customer must have never filed a tax return or be registered in Indiana for the tax type in question, never been audited or contacted by DOR for this tax type and is not an Indiana housed business or have a brick-and-mortar filing obligation.
