Last updated on Wednesday, January 3, 2018

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Jacob Rawson, a student at the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (ISBVI), was selected to represent Indiana in the Lions Clubs International Essay Contest.

"Jacob is a great student and we are proud to see him receive this honor," said Jim Durst, superintendent of the ISBVI. "We are grateful for the leadership of the Lions Clubs and the many ways they have partnered with the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired through the years."

Jacob's essay will now advance to the international level of competition. If declared the grand prize winner, he will receive a cash award of US$5,000 plus a trip for the winner and two family members to a special award ceremony in New York at the United Nations.

Each year, Lions clubs around the world sponsor this contest in local schools and youth groups. The contest was created to offer an opportunity to students with visual impairments to express their feelings of peace. More than four million children from nearly 100 countries have participated in the contest. The contest is open to students between the ages of 11-13. This year's theme is "The Future of Peace."

Established in 1847, the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (ISBVI) is nationally and internationally recognized for its excellence and best practices in educating children and young adults who are blind or have low vision. The School is a critical resource for Indiana's children who are blind or have low vision and the teachers, parents, and caregivers who work with them. Every year the school educates hundreds of children and young adults ranging in age from 3 to 22 years old and living in all parts of Indiana.
