Rep. Messer Speaks on House Floor Urging Senate to End Filibuster, Stop Shutdown Messer: "Put the American people back in charge."

Last updated on Sunday, January 21, 2018

(WASHINGTON) - Rep. Luke Messer (IN-06) Saturday spoke on the floor of the House of Representatives urging the Senate to end the filibuster and stop the government shutdown.

"The Schumer shutdown is proving once again that the U.S. Senate is broken," Messer said on the House floor. "The House did its job and voted to keep the government open. Now, both Republicans and Democrats in the Senate need to do their jobs too."

"Unfortunately because of the filibuster, the Senate is being governed by a liberal minority that would rather shut down the government and play politics, than pass President Trump's agenda and listen to the will of the American people," Messer said. "If they don't want to do their jobs, then we need to move on without them."

Messer is leading calls for the U.S. Senate to eliminate the filibuster, which requires the U.S. Senate to have 60 votes - instead of a simple majority- to pass legislation. The funding bill received a simple majority vote of 50-49 in the Senate Friday, and would have passed if not for the filibuster.

"It's time to end the filibuster in the U.S. Senate. The American people demand it," Messer said on the House floor. "If there was no filibuster, this government shutdown would already be over. So, let's stop the political games, end the filibuster, open our government and put the American people back in charge."

Earlier Saturday, Messer announced he would donate his pay for the duration of the government shutdown to Indiana pro-life charities.

"The House did its job and voted to keep the government open," Messer said. "Now, the Senate needs to end the filibuster and put aside the partisan political games. I will be donating my pay during the shutdown to Indiana pro-life charities."
