Messer Speaks On House Floor In Support Of Medical Device Tax Repeal

Last updated on Thursday, January 18, 2018

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - U.S. Rep. Luke Messer (IN-06) Wednesday spoke on the House Floor to urge support for the repeal of Obamacare’s medical device tax.

After repeated calls from Messer, the government funding bill the House will vote on tomorrow includes a two-year delay of the Obamacare tax, which disproportionately harms Hoosiers. Messer continues to urge for a permanent repeal of the medical device tax.

"Obamacare's medical device tax is bad for tens of thousands of Hoosier workers all over the state, including those in Warsaw, Bloomington, Mishawaka, and Indianapolis, and it must be repealed," Messer said. "Fortunately, some relief may soon be on the way. This delay will be good for Hoosier workers and good for Indiana's economy, but we must continue to fight for a permanent repeal."

The medical device tax was passed as part of Obamacare, which became law in 2010. It imposes a 2.3 percent excise tax on all medical device sales. The tax applies to a broad range of products, including artificial joints, pacemakers, and dental instruments. In 2015, Congress voted to delay the tax for two years and it went back into effect the first of the year.

Medical device companies employ roughly 20,000 people in Indiana, second in the nation only to California.
