Medical Experts Fear Worst Flu Season Ever

Last updated on Thursday, January 11, 2018

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Medical experts say we could be about to see the worst flu season in history.

The Center for Disease Control says this year's flu virus in the U.S. could reach epidemic proportions soon. The flu is widespread in 46 states including Indiana and Illinois.

So far there has been 25 flu related deaths in Indiana since the flu season began.

To make matters worse, the flu vaccine is not proving to be very effective against this year's main flu strain because of a virus mutation.

The flu is also costly. The CDC estimates the flu costs the United States more than $10 billion a year in direct medical expenses. Lost earnings from the flu cost businesses is estimated at more than $16 billion annually.
