Rare Earth Deposits Discovered In Coalfields

Last updated on Friday, December 1, 2017

(ILLINOIS) - The U.S. Department of Energy said high concentrations of rare earth elements were found in coal samples taken from Southern Illinois, the Appalachian and Rocky Mountain coalfields, and Pennsylvania’s anthracite coal region.

DOE said the deposits are greater than 300 parts per million and therefore viable for commercial development.

Rare earths are a critical element used in computers, cell phones, and national defense systems.
