Libertarians Support Veterans Groups On Cannabis

Last updated on Thursday, December 14, 2017

(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Libertarian Party of Indiana is pleased to see that efforts for the legalization and medical usage of marijuana are taking hold in Indiana.

"I congratulate the American Legion for proposing a bill that recognizes the use of medical marijuana as a valid treatment option," stated Timothy Maguire, chairman of the Libertarian Party of Indiana; "They join Libertarians, Hoosier Veterans for Medical Cannabis, AMVETS, and a majority of Hoosiers who support increased freedom for patients and doctors to choose the treatment options right for them."

Additionally, the Libertarian Party of Indiana is happy to hear that a republican, Jim Lucas, has led the introduction of the bill making its way to the house for review.

With growing public support, medical marijuana in Indiana is coming closer to being a reality. "Passing a medical marijuana bill will attract veterans to live in Indiana due to expanded options for medical treatment," Chairman Maguire went on to say. "Gov. Holcomb says he wants to increase the appeal of Indiana for veterans, but unfortunately, his plans to combat the opioid crisis in Indiana are deeply seated in more enforcement, instead of expanded treatment options."

While the threat of opioids is very real, increased enforcement has proven to be ineffective, simply filling prisons and making treatment difficult. The Libertarian Party has supported the legalization of marijuana since its founding in 1971, and hopes that Indiana lawmakers will finally support their fellow Hoosiers with expanded treatment options for all.
