IWU Graduate Counseling Professor Receives $200,000 Lilly Grant

Last updated on Wednesday, December 20, 2017

(MARION) - Indiana Wesleyan University’s Dr. Judith Justice, director of Graduate School Counseling, and her team have received a Lilly Endowment grant of $200,000 to support their new Comprehensive Counseling Initiative for the Graduate School Counseling program.

As part of the Counseling Initiative, the Lilly Endowment offered to help Indiana colleges and universities enhance their counselor preparation and principal preparation programs to prepare future counselors and principals better to address the academic, career, social and emotional needs of Indiana's K-12 students. Earlier this year, the Endowment made 19 planning grants to colleges and universities to help them explore potential improvements to their counselor and principal preparation programs and prepare implementation grant proposals.

IWU was one of six Indiana universities to receive implementation grants.

Justice's team included Jennifer Money-Brady, assistant professor of Graduate Counseling; Dr. Candice Norris-Brown, assistant professor of Graduate Counseling; and Amanda Schwyn, IWU graduate student. When applying for the grant, the group proposed a plan that included four basic initiatives:

1. Scholarships and research grants to increase the diversity of school counselors
2. Symposiums and webinars to enhance collaboration between school principals and school counselors
3. Enhanced School Counseling program curriculum to include six additional courses as the program is mandated to increase to 60 credit hours by the school's accrediting body, Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP)
4. Professional development for the team

"We are so grateful to Lilly for their faith in us and to God for this gift to further His kingdom, beginning with youth and education," said Justice.
