CDC Reports Flu Season Off to Fast Start

Last updated on Wednesday, December 6, 2017

(UNDATED) - This year’s flu season is off to a fast — and early — start.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, four states, Georgia, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Massachusetts, have widespread flu activity.

There were none at this time last year.

Doctors say they have noticed cases of the flu picking up "dramatically" in the last week.

And there's more bad news -- it seems the dominant strain this year will be H-3-N-2, which is a more severe form of the flu.

While the flu shot is not as effective in preventing H-3-N-2, experts say everyone should still get one.

The vaccine protects against other flu strains and is especially important for adults over 50.
