(BURROWS) - An incident near the railroad tracks in Burrows left a 14-year-old girl with severe head injuries and another teen hurt after a possible railroad spike flew off the tracks Friday night.

The 14-year-old girl was airlifted to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. A spokesperson for the hospital reported the girl is listed in stable condition. The male suffered cuts below his neck and was treated at a local hospital.

Carroll County Sheriff Tobe Leazenby says they are looking into the possibility that a railroad spike was loose and when the train passed it flew into the air hitting the girl and her friend who were standing near the tracks around 7:46 p.m.

Leazenby says the two were standing near the tracks waiting for the train to pass so they could cross the tracks when they were both hit by a piece of metal, believed to be six to eight inches or longer.

"At this point that possibly a railroad spike had either worked its way loose from the railroad bed or was part of the process and may have caused the injury," he added.

Norfolk Southern issued a statement saying, "Norfolk Southern is continuing its investigation into this incident and is working closely with the Carroll County Sheriff's Office."

Officials are currently reviewing video from the train as part of the investigation.
