(BRAZIL) - Marion County Sheriff John R. Layton has been elected by fellow sheriffs to serve as president of the Indiana Sheriffs' Youth Ranch for future law enforcement officers and at-risk kids.

Layton was elected to replace Boone County Sheriff Mike Nielsen, who was immediately nominated and elected to stay on the board as an at-large trustee. Both elections were by unanimous vote.

Often credited with the vision of the Youth Ranch, Layton has worked alongside Nielsen in being a vocal advocate and active fundraiser for the statewide not-for-profit since its creation in 2016.

For 38 years, sheriffs and deputies have hosted career and leadership camps for Indiana middle schoolers. The new Indiana Sheriffs' Youth Ranch, now under development in rural West Central Indiana, will be the permanent site of those camps - which are expected to expand to more days per week and more weeks per summer.

Other members of the Youth Ranch board include:

  • Tim Troyer, Steuben County Sheriff, Youth Ranch Board Vice President;

  • Reggie Nevels, Grant County Sheriff, Youth Ranch Board Secretary;

  • Steve Rogers, Howard County Sheriff, Youth Ranch Board Treasurer;

  • Tim Bottoms, Gibson County Sheriff, Southwest Region Board Trustee;

  • John Boyd, La Porte County Sheriff, Northwest Region Board Trustee;

  • Jeff Campos, LaGrange County Sheriff, Northeast Region Board Trustee;

  • Brett Clark, Hendricks County Sheriff, Central Region Board Trustee;

  • Jeff Cumberworth, Ripley County Sheriff, Southeast Region Board Trustee; and

  • Paul Harden, Clay County Sheriff, At-Large Board Trustee.
