Last updated on Friday, November 10, 2017

(JASPER CO.) - A traffic stop for speed ended with Hobart Police pursuing a car on I-65 south bound at the 233 mile marker (this is three miles north of State Road 10).

Preliminary investigation revealed at approximately 10:10 a.m., Wednesday morning, a Hobart police officer working a federal grant attempted to pull over a 2018 Kia Sportage for speeding. The vehicle failed to stop and a pursuit was initiated.

The Kia made a U-turn by driving into the median and going north. A trooper working in the construction zone on I-65 northbound at the 235.4 mile marker had traffic stopped for road patching repair. The Kia was driving north bound on the outer shoulder when it approached the trooper at the front of the stopped traffic. The driver of the Kia proceeded to put the SUV into reverse and drove south on the north bound outer shoulder. The Kia then drove into the median where an Indiana State Police car was. He drove straight at the state police car swerving at the last minute hitting the state car. The pursuit continued south bound when the Kia braked hard went back into the median and went into the north bound lanes of I-65. The trooper who was hit was behind the Kia north bound when it went back into the median, went across I-65 south bound, down and through the ditch on the west side, through a wire fence into a sub-division. The driver went between two houses in the sub-division and crashed the SUV in a wooded area where the driver fled. The driver fled to a residence in the sub-division asking the resident for a ride. The driver then fled the residence leaving a jacket behind. The Kia was a rental vehicle out of Indianapolis. The trooper involved in the crash was taken to Saint Anthony's Hospital in Crown Point with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver was described as a male black, approximately 6'3", 240 pounds, stocky built, in his mid-30's, wearing a black T-shirt with white lettering. He was seen in the area of County Line Road and State Road 10 in Jasper/Newton County. Anyone who has information or sees this individual please call 911 or your local police agency.
