(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - The NATO training and support mission in Afghanistan, dubbed Resolute Support, will boost its force strength from about 13,000 troops to around 16,000, according to NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg.
"Around half would be U.S. and roughly half non-U.S."
Stoltenberg said Tuesday from NATO headquarters in Brussels that exact numbers are not yet decided, and will be a topic of deliberation when NATO defense ministers meet Thursday. He said the forces will aid Afghan troops in creating a security environment that forces the Taliban to negotiate with the Afghan government.
"So the reason why we are supporting the Afghan security forces is to enable a political, peaceful solution."
