(INDIANAPOLIS) - Today is America Recycles Day (ARD), and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) encourages Hoosiers to reduce, reuse and recycle.

Created in 1997 by the National Recycling Coalition, ARD is the only nationally recognized day and coast-to-coast community-driven campaign dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the United States.

Every year on November 15 and the weeks leading up to it, IDEM - along with countless organizations across the country - celebrates ARD to help Americans understand the benefits of recycling and what items are recyclable.

This year's theme for ARD is "I want to be recycled!" With that in mind, the next time you throw something away, ask yourself, "can this item be recycled?" Asking yourself this simple question is the first step to living a recycled lifestyle, which at its core, means recycling at home, work and on-the-go.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, only about 35 percent of what Americans throw away is recycled. That means more than half of our waste is still going into landfills or incinerators.

That's why we encourage Hoosiers to get involved by taking the #BeRecycled Pledge, a promise to be part of the solution by being more mindful of how to properly recycle the products we use. Families can learn more about what and where they can recycle by contacting their local solid waste management district or by visiting .

Therefore on November 15 and in the years ahead, we encourage all Hoosiers to take action and help raise awareness of the benefits of recycling. Recycling is the easiest thing we can all do to improve our communities, conserve natural resources and create green jobs.
