FCC Takes Action Against Robocallers

Last updated on Wednesday, November 22, 2017

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - The Federal Communications Commission approved a rule to protect consumers from unwanted robocalls by removing regulatory obstacles that keep phone companies from blocking calls that are likely fraudulent.

The FCC said it receives more than 200,000 complaints a year from annoyed consumers, and estimated that 2.4 billion robocalls were made each month in 2016.

The rule specifically allows telephone companies to block calls from invalid numbers, such as those with non-existent area codes and numbers that have not been assigned to a voice service provider.
