Brain Sugar Linked To Alzheimer's Disease

Last updated on Wednesday, November 8, 2017

(UNDATED)- Scientists supported by the National Institute on Aging found a connection between how the brain metabolizes glucose (that is, sugar that is delivered through the bloodstream) and the symptoms and severity of Alzheimer’s disease.

Talk Media News reports the study used brain tissue samples from autopsies of participants in the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging, and found distinct abnormalities in the breakdown of glucose that could be linked to the severity of Alzheimer's in each studied person.

Scientists said they want to examine whether diabetes and insulin use to control blood sugars is implicated in Alzheimer's disease.
