U.S. Navy Instructor And Student Killed After T-45 Jet Aircraft Crashes

Last updated on Tuesday, October 3, 2017

(WASHINGTON) - The U.S. Navy said Monday that an instructor and student were killed after the T-45 training jet aircraft they were flying crashed Sunday night in a remote area of eastern Tennessee.

The two pilots and their T45-C Goshawk aircraft, assigned to Training Air Wing 1 based at Naval Air Station Meridian in Mississippi, went missing Sunday afternoon.

The nearby Monroe County Sheriff's Office said it received a report of a brush fire, and shortly thereafter discovered that a plane crash had caused the fire near the Tellico Plains in the Cherokee National Forest. The sheriff's office said it learned that it was a Navy plane that had crashed, and notified the Navy.

The Navy said it has opened an investigation into the crash.

In April, Fox News reported that 100 pilots had refused to fly the T45 after a series of incidents where pilots experienced histotoxic hypoxia, meaning they weren't getting enough oxygen. After grounding the planes for three days and a period of flight restrictions, the planes were again allowed to fly with upgraded oxygen sensors.
