Last updated on Sunday, October 29, 2017

(VALPARAISO) - Indiana Conservation Officers are identifying the person reported missing in Long Lake as 20-year-old Keegan Whaling, of Valparaiso.

Indiana Conservation Officers and members of the Porter County Dive Team, and Valparaiso Police Department have utilized sonar, rescue divers, and unmanned aerial vehicles to search the area described in the investigation.

A search of Long Lake has been underway since shortly after 7:00 a.m. and will be continuing this evening. The search has been hindered by thick vegetation under the lake's surface. Indiana Conservation Officers will be utilizing a different type of sonar device in an attempt to perform a more effective search due to the density of the vegetation in the area.

Indiana Conservation Officers are asking boaters to avoid the area while the operation continues.

Eairler - Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating a boating related incident in which a 20 year old Valparaiso man was last seen in the waters of Long Lake shortly before 7 a.m. this morning, after the canoe he and a friend were in capsized.

Early this morning two men were canoing approximately 150 yards offshore when the boat capsized, resulting in both men entering the water. One of the men was able to make it to shore and summon help from a nearby resident. He reported that he last saw his friend in the water and did not see him make it to shore.

At this time, the missing person has not been located and is believed to be in the water.
