(JAY CO.) - Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating a fall from a tree stand that occurred in Jay County this morning.

At approximately 11:30 a.m.. officers and EMS personnel responded to a woods just outside of Pennville and found 48-year-old Michael G. Lee of Bluffton lying on the ground, complaining of back pain.

Upon further investigation, it was determined that Lee had fallen approximately 30 feet, after both straps of the lock-on type stand he was deer hunting from snapped. The stand was old, and the straps were moldy and in poor condition. In addition, Lee was not wearing a safety harness.

Lee was transported by helicopter from the scene to Ft. Wayne Lutheran Hospital, where he was diagnosed with a fractured vertebra in his lower back.

Indiana Conservation Officers would like to remind hunters of the importance of checking the condition of tree stands before hunting from them, including all straps and cables. If signs of damage are found, stands should be repaired or replaced. In addition, safety harnesses should always be worn when hunting from any type of tree stand to prevent falls.
