(STEUBEN CO.) - Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating a tree stand fall which occurred on Saturday evening, in Steuben County just northeast of Angola.

Police say that 50-year-old Mark Neuhaus of Angola was archery hunting on private ground when he fell approximately 16 feet while climbing into his deer stand at approximately 5:30 p.m. At approximately 8:15 p.m. when he did not return to his home, his two brothers, Thomas and Stephen Neuhaus, went to search for him. They found him lying at the bottom of his tree stand and transported him back to his house by personal vehicle.

Steuben County EMS transported Neuhaus from his residence to a nearby location where he was airlifted to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne by Samaritan helicopter. Neuhaus sustained injuries to his left arm, ribs and leg because of the fall. He was not wearing a safety harness.

This marks the second Steuben County tree stand fall with serious injuries in the first two weeks of deer archery season. Neither victim were wearing a safety harness, which would have kept both hunters from falling to the ground from their elevated stand.

Assisting Indiana Conservation Officers at the scene were Steuben County Sheriff's Dept., Angola Fire Dept., Steuben County EMS, and Parkview Samaritan Helicopter.
