Average Job Tenure Drops To 5.1 Years

Last updated on Thursday, September 21, 2017

(UNDATED) - Research from the Employee Benefit Research Council indicates that the average U.S. worker’s average number of years at their current job was 5.1 years in 2016, down from the high mark of 5.5 years achieved in 2014

A decline in unemployment was one reason for the decline in job tenure; that is, as more jobs were created, more workers traded their old jobs for new ones.

"The American workforce has always been mobile," EBRI said, noting that a person who stays with one employer their entire working career "has always been rare."
