Two Troopers And U.S. Postal Worker Credited With Saving Man's Life

Last updated on Tuesday, September 26, 2017

(INDIANAPOLIS) - An elderly Indianapolis man is alive today thanks to the efforts of a United States Postal Worker and two Indiana State Troopers.

September 20th, U.S. Postal Carrier Glenn Bass was delivering mail along his route when he noticed something suspicious at a residence on the east side of Indianapolis. Also on that same route, a few houses away, lives Trooper Aryaun Smith. Mr. Bass contacted Trooper Smith right away and told her about an elderly man who had not gotten the mail out of his mailbox for several days, and he said it was very uncharacteristic for him to leave his mail and packages outside. Trooper Smith responded to the residence and knocked on the door, checked windows and called out for the man. She noticed glass in one of the garage doors had been recently broken which raised her suspicion. After several minutes with no contact Trooper Smith contacted Sgt. Josh Watson for assistance. When Sgt. Watson arrived he and Trooper Smith attempted several times to see inside the home or make verbal contact with somebody inside. The Troopers spoke to a neighbor and determined an elderly male lives there alone, they decided there was exigent circumstances in this case and forced entry into the home to check the welfare of the resident.

Once inside the home the two troopers began hearing muffled sounds of distress coming from a back bedroom. Inside the bedroom they found an elderly male had fallen and severely injured himself and it appeared he had been laying there for several days. He was very disoriented and barely conscious. They immediately summoned the Indianapolis Fire Department for medical aid and the male was transported to the hospital.

Had it not been for the diligent act of compassion and concern by Mr. Glenn as well as Trooper Smith and Sgt. Watson's excellent role as true servants in their community, this elderly man likely would not have been found until it was too late.

Both Trooper Smith and Sgt. Watson have been nominated by their supervisors for life saving awards.
