Last updated on Thursday, September 28, 2017

(UNDATED) - A first-of-its-kind national survey conducted by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau revealed that 43 percent of U.S. adults have to struggle to pay their bills and keep food on the table.

The financial shortfall may be even worse.

The survey also found that 34 percent of all U.S. consumers said they experienced "material hardships" during the past year.

Examples of "material hardships" defined by CFPB: running out of food, not being able to afford a place to live, or lacking money needed for medical treatment.
