Pilot Shortages Developing For Air Force And Airlines

Last updated on Wednesday, September 20, 2017

(UNDATED) - The U.S. Air Force and the nation’s commercial airline industry are both struggling to keep their pilot seats filled, and future projections suggest neither will meet their needs.

Particularly discomforting is a shortage of trained jet fighter pilots, expected to exceed 1,000 by the September 30 end of the current fiscal year, according to a Congressional Research Service memo circulating on Capitol Hill.

One reason cited for the Air Force shortage is hiring competition from the commercial airline industry which has a mandatory retirement age of 65 that could claim as many as 42 percent of its current pilots during the next 10 years.
