(INDIANAPOLIS) - High achieving Hoosier students interested in teaching in Indiana may apply for the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship through November 30, 2017.

The program offers 200 renewable scholarships of $7,500 each year (up to $30,000) to students who commit to teaching in Indiana for five consecutive years upon graduation. Last year, a total of 642 students applied, with applications coming from 274 high schools in 85 of the Indiana's 92 counties. The initial 200 recipients began using the scholarship in August.

Authored by House Speaker Brian Bosma (R-Indianapolis), the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship was established with bipartisan support by the 2016 Indiana General Assembly.

"Educators have the incredible ability to inspire our Hoosier children and develop the skills of our future leaders," Bosma said. "This scholarship reflects our statewide goal of encouraging more high-achieving students to pursue a worthwhile and fulfilling career in the classroom."

The program is available to students who either graduate in the highest 20 percent of their class or earn a score in the top 20th percentile on the SAT or ACT.

"We are excited to continue supporting students who are committed to a teaching career," said Teresa Lubbers, Indiana Commissioner for Higher Education. "These scholarships have the potential to improve education around the state for generations to come."

Students interested in applying need to be nominated by a teacher and submit a nomination form with their application. Students are encouraged to complete the nomination form before starting their application. Students may apply at

The Commission is partnering with local community, business and education leaders across the state, and will host interview sessions throughout Indiana with prospective scholarship recipients early next year.
