Erratic Driving Complaint Leads To Several Charges

Last updated on Wednesday, September 20, 2017

(HIGHLAND) - Monday an erratic driving complaint lead to the arrest of a Highland woman.

Around 1 p.m. the Indiana State Police responded to a complaint of an erratic driver driving eastbound on the Indiana Toll Road in a construction area. The vehicle, a gold BMW SUV, reportedly was swerving from lane to lane before pulling into the service plaza located just west of the Elkhart exit.

Trooper Kyle Glaze quickly located the BMW parked several feet from a gas pump, with the motor running and the female driver apparently sleeping. Trooper Glaze knocked on the window to get the driver's attention and began to speak to the driver, identified as 41-year-old Carrie Kooi of Highland, IN. Kooi was slow to respond and uncooperative as Glaze conducted an investigation for operating while intoxicated.

Glaze ultimately got a warrant for a blood draw and transported Kooi to Elkhart General. During this time Kooi allegedly offered money to Glaze to let her go and spit on Glaze several times.

Kooi was taken to the Elkhart County Jail and preliminarily arrested on the following charges:

Glaze was assisted by Trooper Andrew Inczaukis, Trooper Brad Kaizer, and Sergeant Jeff Whiteman.

The Indiana State Police would like to remind you to call 911 if you see an erratic or possibly impaired driver. Be prepared to give a location and direction of travel as well as a vehicle description.
