(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana Attorney General Curtis Hill advises Hoosiers to take immediate steps to protect themselves in the wake of a data breach affecting customers of Equifax, including up to 143 million Americans nationwide and 3.8 million Indiana residents.
Equifax, one of the largest consumer credit reporting agencies in the United States, says a cyberattack compromised such personal customer information as names, addresses, birthdates, Social Security numbers and driver's license numbers.
The Atlanta-based company discovered July 29th that it had been hacked before publicly disclosing the breach more than a month later.
The Office of Attorney General maintains a website at which Hoosiers can request a freeze of their credit.
There is no charge for this service.
Equifax also has a website at which individuals can check to see if they have been affected and allows people to sign up for free credit monitoring.
