(UNDATED) - Animal welfare organizations in Texas and Florida are facing a capacity crisis with hurricane-displaced pets added to their already full shelters.

In response, BISSELL Pet Foundation (BPF), a nonprofit based in Grand Rapids, MI, organized an adoption initiative, EMPTY THE SHELTERS Hurricane Relief, to save lives and help pets from these areas find loving homes in other parts of the country. This initiative is made possible by generous support from BISSELL Inc.

Now through September 23, BISSELL Inc will pay adoption fees for pets transported from hurricane disaster areas and taken in by shelters in BPF's partner network. Currently, 12 organizations in 6 states are participating in EMPTY THE SHELTERS Hurricane Relief with pets from hurricane-impacted areas available for free adoption.

Additionally, on September 23, BPF will hold EMPTY THE SHELTERS Hurricane Relief events at these 12 locations. BISSELL Inc will pay adoption fees for all available pets in an effort to clear those shelters, making space for more pets from hurricane areas to be transported. In total, more than 1,000 pets are expected to be available.

"Now is such an important time to choose adoption," remarked Cathy Bissell, Founder of BISSELL Pet Foundation. "In the wake of these natural disasters, pets need to be moved out of the devastated areas, but shelters are full. Please save a life and help us Empty The Shelters to make room for pets in dire need of safety."

BPF hopes hundreds of pets will be adopted making space for hundreds more who otherwise might have faced euthanasia due to the overcrowding. Families that adopt will be required to pay licensing fees for their pet - costs may vary by state and county.

Participating organizations will be adhering to their standard adoption requirements and adopters are encouraged to review those requirements in advance. For more information about EMPTY THE SHELTERS, please visit www.bissellpetfoundation.org.
