President Trump Signs Legislation Donnelly Helped Shape That Imposes Sanctions on Russia, Iran, and North Korea

Last updated on Friday, August 4, 2017

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly welcomed news that President Trump signed bipartisan legislation that the Senator helped shape, which will increase sanctions on Russia, Iran, and North Korea.

The Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act will: increase sanctions on Iran for its ballistic missile program, support for terrorism, human rights violations, and transfers of weapons to or from Iran; strengthen U.S. sanctions against Russia in response to Russian interference in the 2016 elections; and sanction North Korean shipping and foreign entities that provide financial services to North Korea or those that produce goods using North Korean prison labor or forced labor. This includes legislation that Donnelly co-led, the Countering Iran's Destabilizing Activities Act, which passed the Senate in June on a 98-2 vote.

Donnelly, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said, "It is important that President Trump signed this bipartisan legislation into law so we can send a unified message to our adversaries that their actions will have harsh consequences. We have put Iran, North Korea and Russia on notice, and I hope our allies and partners around the world will follow our lead with increased sanctions of their own."
